Upper Market is a small, mostly-residential neighborhood surrounded by several popular neighborhoods: Noe Valley to the East, Midtown Terrace to the West, Cole Valley to the North, and Glen Park to the South. Charming, Victorian-style row houses are nestled along with fully renovated condos, many of which offer incredible panoramic Bay and Nature Reserve views. Residents of Upper Market not only enjoy the peaceful atmosphere are amazing views, they also enjoy convenient access to all of the shops and restaurants in The Castro neighborhood and plenty of nearby public transportation options.
There are several community and neighborhood gardens in San Francisco, and the community garden near Clayton Street and Corbett Avenue is a great place for Upper Market residents to get their hands dirty. This garden is 100% volunteer-driven, and if you aren’t into gardening, this is still an amazing place to relax with a book. The neighborhood is also close to Twin Peaks, Christmas Tree Point, and Tank Hill, where you can enjoy some of the best views in San Francisco.
Although Noe Valley’s 24th Street is closest to the Upper Market, The Castro is the easier commercial district to access via public transit thanks to the L Bus that runs along Market Street. At the intersection of Market Street and Castro Street, there are several popular restaurants and shops to choose from, including:
Orphan Andy’s: No matter the time of day, this 24/7 diner is always serving up some incredible fare. The line out the door on most weekends is all you need to see about how popular this local diner is.
Dog Eared Books: A little further south on Castro Street, Dog Eared Books’ sister store has been a popular new/used bookstore since 1992. You never know what type of literature you will find, which is part of the fun.
Castro Coffee: Featuring a vast array of coffee beans and looseleaf teas, Castro Coffee is the perfect place for your favorite espresso and tea drinks. Before you leave, make sure to grab a pound of your favorite roast for home!
The L Taraval Bus Route, usually stylized as the LBUS, is the easiest route for Upper Market residents to utilize when commuting around San Francisco. When heading northbound, the LBUS runs along Market Street; southbound, it wraps around Midtown Terrace and travels along Taraval Street until it reaches the San Francisco Zoo. Commuters who need to access a BART Station can simply ride the LBUS to the Van Ness Station, taking no more than 30 minutes. Drivers and carpoolers who live in Upper Market can take a short drive south on O’’Shaughnessy Blvd/Bossworth Street to access Interstate 280.
